About Matanuska Tundra

Matanuska Tundra is a strain by Sagarmatha that is about as close as you can get to a landrace strain in North America. Sourced from the Matanuska Valley in Alaska, this high-yielding, Indica-dominant strain is a major mood booster. Alaska may not bring beautiful green buds to mind, but this valley is a chilly grassland that’s perfect for the right strain. Also known as Matanuska Thunder F**k, this strain has pungent flavors and a frosty disposition that has been enchanting Northwest users since the 70s.

The first thing to know about Matanuska Tundra is that it comes up a lot in Sagarmatha’s breeding lines. It’s basically the building block of their whole catalog. Matanuska Tundra is decades old, first being crossed in the 70s, a mix between a Sativa from Northern California and a Ruderalis strain from Russia. The genetic tree is so old now that it’s lost definition, but researchers believe that Cinderella 99, Stinky D, and AK-47 strains may be part of the lineage. The plant itself is Indica-dominant, with broad leaves and a short stalk. It stays low to the ground and thick with branches, so growers will need to cut their teeth on a little pruning know-how to get a successful crop if they plan on using the ScroG method. Otherwise, just let the strain stay bushy. When done right, the strain explodes in a bright green, strong central cola covered in orange hairs and frosty crystal trichomes.

GROWING TIP: Matanuska Tundra has so many branches that it can be confusing to gauge when it should be harvested. Growers should note the ripeness of the plant by how the lower buds look. If you wait for the top ones, it’ll be too, as the Sagarmatha breeders tried this out for 115 days, waiting for the top branches to ripen. It should be more like 65 days from planting to harvest with this strain. Thankfully, the strain rewards you for putting up with its branches by being incredibly resilient to just about anything nature throws at it (that’s Alaska for you).

The strain’s terpene profile favors humulene, terpineol, and myrcene. This produces a strain with an aroma of pine, menthol, and a skunky aftertaste of chocolate. The high creeps up on you, as many of these older hybrids do.

The effects of this strain may be creepers, but they produce a mood-elevating impact that can make the stress and achiness of daily life surrender to the beauty of the Matanuska Tundra. Despite a learning curve for growers, the strain has been a California favorite for decades for good reasons, the best of which are a potent skunky flavor and a burst of positivity.
